Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon

The Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon is a renewable energy project capable of generating 240MW nominal rated capacity averaging 14 hours of generation every day. This is enough energy to power 120,000 homes (enough to power 70% of Swansea Bay's annual domestic electricity use) for 120 years. The clean and reliable energy source will contribute towards national carbon emission reduction targets – over 216,000 tonnes of CO2 saved each year.

The lagoon will consist of a 9.5km breakwater wall which will enclose 11.5km squared of tidal area. The wall will start at the entrance to the River Tawe, South of Swansea Docks and curve around to the location of the new Swansea University Campus, towards the River Neath.

Construction Opportunities

Many of the component parts for the building of the lagoon could be manufactured or fabricated locally.  These could include turbine housings, sluice gates, flood doors, rails, electrical controls, hydraulics, precast concrete components, the visitor centre and ancillary buildings.  Anticipated investment for these components is estimated to be in the region of £300m.  Early estimates suggest 2,880 construction jobs could be created, covering a range of skill levels.

Leisure & Tourism Opportunities

There is significant potential for the tidal lagoon to become a foundation venue for local and national sports use.  We see potential for cycling, walking and running around the lagoon wall, as well as open water swimming, rowing and sailing as further example uses.  Discussions are under way to assess the most appropriate opportunities and ensure facilities are available to enable these.
